Toy Australian Shepherds – All You Need To Know

The Toy Australian Shepherd, commonly referred to as the Toy Aussie Shepherd, is a breed variation of the Mini Australian Shepherd that originated in the United States of America. There is still some confusion regarding the size and height of this breed. However, to be classified as a Toy Aussie the dog must stand under 14 inches tall and weigh under 20 pounds. Anything over, between 14 to 17 inches, would be classified as a Miniature Australian Shepherd. While anything bigger than the Mini Australian Shepherd, taller than 17 inches, would be categorised as a Standard Australian Shepherd.

Qualities & Features of the Toy Aussie Shepherd

Coat

The coat on the Toy Australian Shepherd is similar to German Shepherd. That is, a medium-length with a slightly wavy, although it can often be straight. Also expect a feathering of the hair on the back of the legs of this canines breed.

Character

The Toy Aussie is an intelligent breed. Like a shepherds, it’s primary nature is a working dog of strong herding and guardian instincts. They make and excellent companion but are a breed whom desires a lot of attention. Certainly not the type of dog who can be left outside and forgotten about for long periods of time. Given too much time and boredom they’ll certainly find some destructive and possibly fatal mischief to get into. They are certainly reserved around strangers. Although this is not to be confused with shyness, they’ll warm up to new guest in no time. Of course always showing their loyalty to their owner.

Temperament

Toy Aussies are easy-going and friendly making a perfect companion for children. They act as a devoted friend and guardian. These dogs rarely show unwanted aggression. However, given their loyal and protective nature they may become aggressive in certain situations that warrant the aggression. Like all Miniature Australian Shepherds they can become destructive and nervous without frequent attention and proper exercise.

Training

The Toy Australian Shepherd is an extremely obedient and easy dog to train. They will however need to begin training at an early age to prevent the nipping at the heels of humans; given their herding dog instinct.

Care

The Toy Australian Shepherds coat is extremely easy to groom and requires little attention. Simple brush occasionally with a firm bristle brush. You’ll find this breed is an average shedder. Compared to other canines this breed makes minimal mess and is relatively easy to feed. Bathe when necessary.

Activity

As mentioned earlier this energetic breed does need frequent exercise. Given their a working dog its best one be taken on daily, long walks or partake in vigorous exercise to remain in shape and to do some real work.

The average Mini Aussie Shepherd litter ranges from 2-6 puppies. With the life expectancy being approximately 12-13 years.
